All the great London Metropolitan Street Improvements - Shaftesbury Avenue; Charing Cross Road; Kingsway; Roseberry Avenue; The Embankment and Holborn Viaduct, incorporated large tunnels just under the surface to take water; gas; electricity; telegraph and telephone cables accessed by gratings and manholes. The object being to obviate the disruptive digging up of the road to effect repairs or lay new services. [Full history and description to be added]
